Located on the left bank of the Rhône, north of Avignon, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the largest cru in the Rhône vineyards, and arguably the most emblematic of the southern Rhône Valley. With 3,150 hectares of vines, it is renowned for its diversity of grape varieties - eighteen in all. But Châteauneuf-du-Pape also has a history that goes back several centuries, carried by the winegrowers who pioneered what would become the AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) and the INAO (Institut National des Appellations d'Origine).
Saint-Joseph: the best in red and white
Situated on the right bank of the Rhône, the Saint Joseph appellation stretches for almost 60 kilometers from north to south, between Chavanay and Guilherand-Granges, opposite Valence. Its AOC decree, published in 1956, covered just six communes at the time. Revised twice, it now covers 1415 hectares of vines, planted in 23 communes in the Ardèche and Loire departments.

The day before, award winners and Gault&Millau partners attended a dinner at Celest, hosted by chefs Jean-François Têtedoie and Anthony Bonnet.
