Gault&Millau's review 2026

It's a little institution close to the prefecture, on the way out to Paris. This pretty house, an old restored barn, with its charming, warm setting (stone, beams, terracotta floor tiles...), has been run for many years by Michel Carrendier in the kitchen and his wife Jacqueline in the dining room, with a welcome and service that are exemplary in their professionalism and kindness. There's no set menu here, but a truly "traditional" à la carte menu with a wide choice of dishes (some 15 in all), featuring excellent Quercy dishes, well-sourced produce (top-quality beef and lamb), masterful cooking and superb sauces. His signature dish "Escalopes de foie gras de canard poêlées au verjus" is a real treat. Admittedly, the menu doesn't change much (even if the suggestion of the day, a pastilla of duck effiloché confit with foie gras, asparagus, broccoli, carrots and potato cake, was a success that evening), the atmosphere is a little dull, and the wine list could do without a few erasures or blanco, but the moment at La Garenne is always a good one.
