Forced Disconnection: Five Digital Detox Hotels to Take a Break from Screens

Forced Disconnection: Five Digital Detox Hotels to Take a Break from Screens

Far from notifications and Wi-Fi, some hotels offer a digital detox to help guests reconnect with a more natural rhythm. Between silence, forgotten rituals, and a return to nature, it’s an immersion in a daily life without connectivity.

Pierre Gautrand

Luxury is no longer found in the cotton-satin sheets or the ocean view. It lies in the silence of a turned-off phone. Faced with hyperconnectivity that erodes sleep, concentration, and the ability to be bored—that underrated skill—a handful of French hotels have taken the problem seriously. Some cut off Wi-Fi, while others design comprehensive digital detox programs. Eight destinations where screens no longer have a place.

Les Lumières, Versailles

Located directly across from the Palace of Versailles, this boutique hotel—a member of Relais & Châteaux—treats disconnection as a precise, almost medical protocol. Starting at dinner, a wooden box placed on the table invites guests to store their phones there, if they wish. In the room, an 8-kg weighted blanket—whose effects on anxiety and sleep quality are well-documented—replaces late-night scrolling. A voice box plays soothing soundscapes, while a mindfulness book is placed on the pillow each evening. Upon request, the Dream Machine—a self-hypnosis device used in some sleep clinics—can be delivered to your room. The interiors, designed by Didier Benderli, do the rest: gray walls, light-colored hardwood floors, soft lighting—an environment designed to be non-stimulating.

Les Cures Marines Trouville MGallery, Trouville-sur-Mer

Since December 2023, this 5-star Belle Époque hotel facing the sea has been operating under The Purist label, Accor’s wellness program structured around five cycles—Marine, Detox, Emotions, Escape, and Longevity. The central concept: Rebalance Impulse, a neuro-meditation session in a zero-gravity chair combining binaural beats, light variations, and breathing exercises. Clinically documented goal: to recalibrate the nervous system disrupted by chronic screen exposure. The rooms designed by Jean-Philippe Nuel are equipped with light therapy lamps and a pillow menu—because the problem often starts there, with the inability to fall asleep without a screen.

Village Castigno, Assignan

No Wi-Fi in the rooms, no television, no impersonal reception: in Assignan, in the Hérault hinterland, disconnecting is structural rather than programmatic. The entire village has been restored to accommodate some thirty accommodations: you enter on foot, by bike, or by electric scooter, leaving your car at the entrance. The 40-hectare biodynamic vineyard surrounding the estate sets the pace of Occitan dolce vita: slow, seasonal, indifferent to notifications. Three restaurants on the central square, an architecturally bold wine cellar, wellness spaces—and the gradual realization that boredom eventually comes to feel like freedom.

Château de Riell, Molitg-les-Bains

Here, disconnecting isn’t a choice but a geographical necessity. In the Molitg Valley, there’s no cell service. No 4G, no reliable Wi-Fi: the Pyrenees do the job that other hotels delegate to expensive programs. This Rococo Relais & Châteaux facing Mount Canigou—17 rooms with open fireplaces, a 60-hectare park, and cozy alcoves—offers something that meditation apps promise but never quite deliver: true silence. Benoît Janet’s restaurant, centered around alpine cheeses and Roussillon wines, takes care of the evenings. The rest belongs to the wind in the cypress trees.

  • Price: starting at 125 euros/night
  • Where? Route des Bains, 66500 Molitg-les-Bains

Grandes Rousses Hotel & Spa, Alpe d’Huez

Perched at an altitude of 1,860 meters facing the peaks of the Grandes Rousses massif, this historic hotel proves that altitude is the best remedy for mental overload. No safe to confiscate your smartphone, but a subtle invitation to let go, thanks to the open views and wide-open spaces. The disconnection experience unfolds naturally, guided by the concept of alpine therapy at the spa, panoramic rooms opening onto the mountains, and an alpine dining experience that showcases the terroir of Isère. Between a session in the heated outdoor pool facing the eternal snows and an oxygen-rich walk through the alpine pastures, the cell phone signal quickly becomes an afterthought. Wi-Fi is available, but no one will blame you for forgetting about it. Research has shown that 48 hours without a screen are enough to see a measurable improvement in sleep and concentration. The altitude does the rest.

Loire Valley Lodges, Esvres-sur-Indre

No 4G, no Wi-Fi, no TV: the rules are clear from the moment you book. Instead, a walkie-talkie to communicate with the staff: an analog device that pretty much sums up the spirit of the place. The 18 lodges are perched four meters above the ground in a 300-hectare private forest, each designed by a different artist, including Charlélie Couture, Aurèle, and Cédric Porchez. Founder Anne-Caroline Frey has made forest therapy the central theme: the physiological effects of forest immersion—lower cortisol levels, improved sleep, reduced heart rate—are integrated into the experience rather than merely touted as a slogan. Private hot tub on every terrace. Less than an hour from Paris by TGV.

  • Price: starting at 500 euros/night
  • Where? Allée de la Duporterie, 37320 Esvres-sur-Indre

Cabanes des Grands Lacs, Franche-Comté

Twenty-nine cabins perched in the trees or suspended above the water, no Wi-Fi, no television: the Coucoo model is based on a simple belief—when the surroundings are beautiful enough, no one asks for Netflix. In Franche-Comté, in the heart of a forest massif crisscrossed by the Great Lakes, this high-end glamping site has realized that nature is the best digital detox there is. Herons at dawn, forest bike trails, uninterrupted reading, a private spa on the terrace of some cabins. All just two hours from Paris—which, for a serious break from it all, is more than enough.

  • Price: starting at 340 euros/night
  • Where? La Forge de Bonnal, 70230 Chassey-lès-Montbozon
  • I want to go to Les Cabanes des Grands Lacs

Brindos Lac & Château, Anglet

29 rooms and 10 waterfront lodges in a six-hectare park surrounding a private lake, just outside Biarritz: Brindos operates on the principle that nature is better than any digital detox program. No formal ban on screens: just a lake, palm groves, a bountiful table featuring local Basque producers, and the gradual realization that the phone no longer has much of urgency to offer. Massages, rowing on the lake, swimming, and the Atlantic just a few kilometers away, in case you miss the horizon.
