5 good British restaurants

5 good British restaurants

Mathilde Bourge | 5/31/24

British cuisine is gaining ground on the Parisian culinary scene. Here are 5 addresses where you can devour a good fish & chip or a traditional beef wellington.

Often shunned or even mocked, British gastronomy has been gaining ground in Paris of late. Whether it's a coincidence or a genuine trend, "British" addresses are sprouting up like mushrooms and making a splash on the Parisian culinary scene. Some of them are even doing justice to the reputation of this comforting cuisine, with fish & chips, beef wellington and scottish eggs. Gault&Millau has selected a few addresses that are sure to make you fall head over heels for British cuisine.

L'Entente, The British Brasserie

L'Entente is one of the pioneering addresses in this field. Oliver Woodhead, owner of this well-established brasserie in Paris for the past eight years, is very proud of his now legendary beef wellington.and also of his fish & chips, whose breading is made with English beer. "We serve it with triple-cooked fries," he explains. "A third of our customers have already lived in England or have ties there, so they're looking for reminders of those times spent there with signature dishes. We don't revisit anything, it's not necessary." At weekends, L'Entente is a hit with its English-style brunch, systematically sold out, but also its Sunday Roast. "We had a lot of requests from our customers so we launched this offer a few months ago. We offer roast beef or chicken, and it's very popular," says Oliver Woodhead.

Lordy's Paris Club

At Lordy's Paris Club, the philosophy is a little different again. Yassine Riahi, Executive Chef at the Sofitel Paris Baltimore Tour Eiffel, explains: "We offer a cuisine with a French base, but tinged with English and New York touches. I play with these three influences to concoct a chic brasserie identity with British accents," he confides. "The breading on the fish & chips, for example, is made with beer and sparkling water, as well as a blend of ten spices. Fries are made with malt vinegar, just like in London. In England, we eat a lot of beans. To adapt them to the French palate, I've used them in purée and pickles... Let's just say that the cuisine is sometimes English, but has a French heart", he sums up. From May 26, Lordy's Paris Club will also be offering a Sunday Roast with boneless chicken in crapaudine, served with a "yellow mustard" poultry sauce. An appointment that should quickly become a must!

The Blossom Arms

The Blossom Arms is the trendiest address in this selection. Freshly inaugurated in 2024, this gastropub offers a relaxed British atmosphere, with the added bonus of broadcasting major sporting events such as rugby, soccer and, of course, the Olympic Games. Chef Alexandre Chapier, already at the helm of Blossom Burgers, rubs shoulders with English pub cuisine, with fish & chips XXL, grilled cheese and fish burger, but above all, craft beer and Guinness flowing like water!

Public House Paris

The Public House Paris brasserie, run by Calum Franklin, one of the UK's leading chefs, has a lot going for it. While there are many classics of British cuisine, such as scotch egg, crab on toast and fish & chips, the house specialty is pies. From potato pie with matured cheddar and caramelized onions to chicken pie with wild mushrooms or braised beef simmered in Guinness... the hardest part is choosing!

Rose Bakery

Rose and Jean-Charles Carrarini, a Franco-British couple, have been in the business for decades. Having been in the business for several decades, they form the lovely duo at the helm of the Rose Bakery restaurant and tearoom, an ideal place to enjoy healthy, home-cooked cuisine. Lunch or brunch, the choice is yours! Recently, Rose Bakery launched a week-long tea time offer with hot drinks, cakes, crumbles, scones and cookies.

Escapes

Les Bonheurs d'Éléonore in Saint-Cast-le-Guildo

Éléonore isn't British, but she's devoted to the British culture. In her little tea room on the Port du Guildo, the young woman immerses us in a "so British" atmosphere, with lots of antique crockery, knick-knacks with a nod to the royal family, and scones served as an afternoon snack, with traditional jam and fresh cream. The perfect way to travel across the Channel without leaving France.

Harbour House Flushing in Falmouth, England

What better way to discover the best of British cuisine than to head straight to the UK? Our recommendation? The Harbour House Flushing in Falmouth, on the south coast of Cornwall. In this charming harbor-side pub, you can eat at any time, from breakfast to dinner. Menus change almost daily and are based on local produce, including fish such as bay mackerel with nduja butter, and meat such as smoked leg of lamb or rump steak with horseradish cream.
