Our favourite hotels where you can sleep under the stars

Our favourite hotels where you can sleep under the stars

There are some luxuries that are measured not by the number of stars on the front wall, but by the stars you can contemplate, lying down, once the sun has set. Sleeping with your head in the stars is a promise of radical escape, where the ceiling fades away to make way for infinity. From a Parisian palace suite to an Alpine dome, we present a selection of six jewel cases where night becomes a spectacle.

Pierre Gautrand

The attraction of the starry night goes beyond the simple quest for the unusual; it touches on a metaphysical dimension that Gaston Bachelard explored in L'Air et les Songes. For the philosopher, contemplation of the night sky is not passivity, but " participation in the becoming of the universe ". Whether you're tucked away in a skyscraper with its dizzying bay windows, or under the glass roof of a secret lodge, you'll be rushing to bed to catch a glimpse of the invisible, the sidereal light usually concealed by our concrete ceilings.

Les Bulles de Bordeaux - Between grape varieties and constellations

just a stone's throw from Saint-Émilion, five transparent bubbles named after local grape varieties - Muscadelle, Cabernet and their cousins - settle in the heart of the vineyards. Nature is no longer a backdrop, but a sleeping partner: as soon as night falls, the constellations invite themselves to the bedside of the King Size bed. A private spa with whirlpool bath extends the experience, and in the morning, the rows of vines awakening under the dew naturally take over from the night sky. just 18 km from the Cité du Vin, but in another world.

Alpin d'Hôme - The balcony of the Southern Alps

In Les Orres, at an altitude of 1,800 meters, geodesic domes and Finnish Kotas set their contemporary lines against the peaks of the Hautes-Alpes. In luxury category accommodation, a King Size bed faces a monumental bay: total zenithal transparency, with no filter on the sky. In winter, the thermal lining maintains a cosy warmth while the snow frames the celestial vault, of a purity rare at this altitude. The rest is just as good: a 300 m² spa with Nordic baths and nets suspended among the larches, and a Kota-Grill for eight around a central fire. Alpine fresh air in all its generosity.

Petit Hôtel Confidentiel - Heaven in the heart of Vieux Chambéry

Behind a historic facade in the heart of Chambéry, this 15-key 5-star hotel hides a suite with an opening to the sky. In the Suite Duplex Balnéo, two large velux windows have been positioned exactly above the bed, transforming the night space into a private observatory. There's no need to escape the city lights: you can gaze up at the stars without leaving the softness of the Egyptian cotton sheets. Downstairs, an ethanol fireplace, a whirlpool bath with chromatic light effects - and the fluffy carpeted staircase to navigate between the two. Under the stars, but with every comfort, in the heart of the city of the Dukes.

Hôtel de Crillon - The Suite"Le Poète", a studio under the Parisian sky

On the seventh floor of the historic Place de la Concorde building, the Le Poète suite rejects the classic ceiling concept in favor of large openings that frame the trajectory of the stars and the distant twinkling of the Eiffel Tower. The bed, positioned against the glass wall, becomes the vantage point for an urban scenography in which the blue light of the Parisian night plays with the reflections of the glass. Part of the Ateliers d'artistes collection, the suite can be combined with Le Peintre and L'Écrivain to form a 250 m² space. Paris, in large format.

Bleu Minuit, L'Arche - Obersteinbach - Cosmic minimalism in Alsace

No bubbles here - an even more radical proposition. In the Vosges du Nord nature park, sheltered from all light pollution, interior designer Anne-Sophie Pailleret has designed cubic lodges whose centerpiece is an immense zenithal glass roof: the ceiling becomes a screen, the cosmos serves as a backdrop. Raw wood, noble textiles, a wood-burning stove and a private terrace overlooking the Vosges forest complete the " slow life " ambience. Astronomical telescopes are available to take you even further into the night. An almost secret address, for purists in search of silence.

Saint James Paris - Appartement Lamoureux, Paris

Hidden behind the gates of a private mansion on Avenue Bugeaud, Saint James Paris is already a well-kept secret. But it's in the Villa adjacent to the château that the Appartement Lamoureux nestles: 60 m² in a 1920 mansion, away from the flow of the hotel. The room has a zenithal opening, allowing you to sleep under the Parisian stars, with all the services of the palace to boot: Clefs d'Or concierge service, Bellefeuille restaurant, Guerlain spa. Sleeping under the stars in the 16ᵉ, without giving up anything.
