Just a few kilometers from Megève, the Hôtel de l'Armancette continues to impress year after year. In the sumptuous village of Saint-Nicolas de Véroce, the Mont Joly bistro is the hotel's "annex". The kitchen is run by Thomas Vonderscher. In this perfectly restored chalet, with a view of the mountain, the starters are rather naughty: pâté croute du chasseur, onion gratinée or a very rustic leek vinaigrette, the dishes are well served, and rather classically inspired. Meagre cooked on one side, scallops with orange-roasted endives, or stuffed cabbage, mushrooms and celeriac, a well-executed winter dish, but which could have been more gourmet, with a nice slice of breast for example. To melt with pleasure, the Great Alps fondue is undoubtedly the best option, with its trilogy of mountain cheeses: fontina, beaufort and vacherin. The dessert menu is a little short, but you'll be able to share the classics, Paris-Brest, or fine apple tart. The wine list is quite extensive, but we'd have liked to see a finer selection of mountain wines. Prices are fair, service efficient.
