Gault&Millau's review 2025

The former residence of the Marquis de Cardaillac, this 16th-century château has been owned by Philippe Gombert since the 1980s, who has turned it into one of the region's finest refuges. A Relais & Châteaux member, the chateau's extraordinary geography sets it in a large park overlooking the blue waters of the Dordogne, all backed by the estate's splendid private forest. Equally seductive, the 18 rooms and suites boast a refined luxury that blends antique furnishings (sumptuous four-poster beds in some rooms) with more contemporary elements. This exceptional address could not fail to offer a restaurant to match its image, and that's exactly what we've achieved with chef Stéphane Andrieux's gourmet cuisine, rooted in the local terroir and organic produce from the kitchen garden, harvested by the agronomist who also looks after the estate's beehives...
