Yoshi is a restaurant of contrasts, so discreet with its wooden door in the Métropole building, right next to the bustling Place du Casino de Monte-Carlo. A contrast of apparent modesty that gives no hint of the soothing, retro-chic futuristic decor that welcomes customers inside. Long run by chef Takeo Yamazaki, the restaurant remains in the hands of his former brigade, who seriously perpetuate the art of sushi and sashimi. The 4-course Natsu evening menu, priced at €149, is a good compromise for discovering raw and cooked dishes. The Shake opens the curtain in the most golden way possible, with salmon ventrèche mixed with a Japanese-style tartar sauce, all "bling-blingué" with a spoonful of caviar topped with gold leaf, the traditional selection of nigiri, maki and sashimi, treated in automatic mode, with a less assertive regularity, where the fresh wasabi of yesteryear gives way to its manufactured version, the Aka-Ebi, the gambero rosso, wild shrimps, here cooked a la plancha (perhaps too much so, in fact), accompanied by a drop of greens, sautéed rice and miso broth, finally strawberries in their ginger-infused juice and a yuzu sorbet that titillates just right. As for the service, it remains a benchmark, attentive, multilingual, precision-tuned and always smiling. The cellar offers the very best, with an exceptional selection of sakes in a resolutely Monegasque price range. Yoshi remains the place to go for a taste of Japanese gastronomy in a unique Monte-Carlo setting. But behind the glitz and refinement, the cuisine is a little less lived-in. And while the experience remains seductive, the bill approaches €200, with a glass of sake at €30 and a bottle of water at €14.
