Gault&Millau's review 2025

Just behind the ramparts of the picture-postcard village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, the Place du Tilleul is quickly snapped up in summer for a table in the shade of the majestic tree. The rest of the time, the bistro's two rooms welcome regulars and readers alike. For the former, Olivier Renaud's cuisine is no longer a discovery, but a confirmation that you're in for a good time, while for the latter, the good old recipes will hit the spot. The daily 3-course menu at €36 sets the example: the egg Florentine on a bed of spinach and Mornay sauce is perfectly executed, the whiting filet en meunière on homemade gnocchi and vegetables in a sauce vierge simply express the South, and the à la carte dessert, to be discovered on the platter, makes the choice even more difficult. In the cellar, we're happy to let ourselves be tempted by the very local Saint-Paul-de-Vence wine from Julien Bertaina's Saint Joseph estate, but we can also choose a bottle from the hundred or so references available. Service is friendly, but the only thing missing is that wine by the glass should be tasted rather than served directly, and that dishes should be announced to be perfect.
