Gault&Millau's review 2026

On the banks (or nearly so) of the Gartempe, right across from the pretty République Bridge, Alban Galpin operates two dining venues within his Hôtel de France: an affordable à la carte bistro and this Lucullus, which offers a more ambitious menu but now struggles to live up to our two-toque standard despite its solid foundation. The foie gras escalope with Poivrade artichokes, mushroom duxelles, and chilled Thai broth makes for a lovely starter; the veal sweetbreads prepared Karrage-style with butter, garlic and parsley, artichokes, and mojette bean hummus is both generous and well-executed, but the desserts—far too run-of-the-mill—and the wine list, which is limited mainly to wines from outside the Loire Valley, could use a bit more attention.
