Gourmet Restaurant
A fine village inn, twenty minutes from Rouen, on the road to the Pays de Caux. In this peaceful village where Michel Guérard grew up with his grandparents, who were butchers, La Croix d’Or is a well-established institution that continues to thrive. The cuisine here is simple yet carefully prepared, offering variety and generous portions, with a touch of provincial flair that’s part of its authentic charm. A delightful duck pressé with vegetable chutney, a solid sea bass fillet with whipped butter served over a saffron-infused shellfish broth and homemade gnocchi (the sun-dried tomatoes are a bit superfluous), and a dessert of creamy apricot with rosemary, almond crumble, and fromage blanc ice cream—all earning it a well-deserved first toque. This Croix d’Or is also a lesson from the countryside to the city—in terms of sincerity and hospitality, the unpretentious kindness of the female staff, respect for the customer (who is given the choice of their meal, with both à la carte and set menus), and constant, attentive service.
