Gault&Millau's review 2026

Right in the heart of Avignon, the legendary Hiély Lucullus isn’t directly on the street but is tucked away on the first floor. That’s why you probably won’t stumble upon it by chance, but a well-informed recommendation will have led you to this unique restaurant that blends the flavors of Peru and Provence. Opened in 1938, it was decorated in the Art Nouveau style, and the current chef, Gérald Azoulay, and his wife, Patricia, chose to preserve the original hardwood floors and the beautiful interior woodwork. This in no way detracts from the enjoyment of the dishes, which are expertly seasoned with a selection of very mild Peruvian chili peppers designed to highlight the delicacy of the fare. The dishes are crafted from fine regional ingredients, such as aged Ikejime trout from L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. The seasonings and accompaniments blend Provençal and Peruvian influences, as seen here with the aji arnaucho chili, herbs, and glasswort. The cooking is flawless, and the vibrantly colored plates are showcased by tableware that is both original and perfectly suited to the dishes. A prime example is the porcelain cacao pod that opens to reveal 70% Peruvian chocolate and its creamy ganache. There are no missteps with this dessert, where rhubarb and amélys oil enrich the flavors. Patricia will guide you through the entire meal and share her knowledge of Peruvian cuisine and wines with you. The menu also offers a wide selection of Côtes du Rhône wines.
