For older generations, “Laden” was a brand of home appliances. But today, for people in northern France—and for the residents of the Hauts-de-France region, who can take pride in him—Florent Ladeyn has become a brand in his own right. Much like Asterix, a fierce defender of his territory, he has become the iconic leader who stood up to the invader, to mass-produced goods, and to cheap, tacky “exoticism.” Here, in the family-run inn, he continues his mission to spread the word about the region by helping producers constantly improve and sell their goods locally. For fifteen years, he has shown that the battle can be won, extending this success throughout Flanders, inspiring others, and sparking new vocations. In this context, a meal here feels much like a communion—with nature, with authenticity, with vegetables that don’t grow straight, and with everything that is true and excellent.
