People don’t just come to Jan’s to eat. They come to experience a story—a culinary moment that blends African, Dutch, Malay, Indian, and European influences, all brought together here with Mediterranean ingredients. You journey through tastes and flavors—not in layers, but through a masterful blend of styles. From biltong—that slowly dried, spiced beef—to rusk, that little travel cookie that comes alive when paired with coffee, the chef’s culinary influences are deeply rooted in South Africa. Two menus are here to guide us. Between the classic menu at €165 and the signature menu at €195—the latter including a visit to the cheese shop, Maria, located across the street—the culinary journey is guaranteed: lobster with artichoke and vanilla gel, tuna tartare with yuzu meringue, the must-try biltong with radish pickles, trout ceviche with cucumber and wasabi, cauliflower glazed with coffee and… chips; duck accompanied by foie gras (which a sharper knife will help reveal to its fullest), plums, and a bobotie whose original recipe is lost in the mists of time, dating back to around 1609. Finally, the refreshing note of amasi, a fermented milk drink borrowed from Zulu culture, blended with apricot and vanilla meringue. The wine list highlights the excellence of French terroirs, but above all the extraordinary diversity of South African vineyards. Wine by the glass, the “sommelier’s gem,” is €35. Elegant service, primarily in English. The restaurant is also open for lunch (on Fridays) during the summer.
