Our 6 Côte Roannaise favourites to try now

Our 6 Côte Roannaise favourites to try now

Just over 30 years ago, in 1994, Côte-Roannaise became an appellation d'origine contrôlée. Although this appellation is relatively recent, the Roannais region has a very long history of winegrowing. Before the phylloxera crisis in 1863, the vineyards covered up to 18,000 hectares. Its shared history with Burgundy and Beaujolais enabled Gamay to make its appearance in the region and become the appellation's signature grape variety.

Laetitia Gautheron

Diogène 2023 - Domaine des Pothiers 1 Domaine Des Pothiers

The nose is already rich, with aromas of fig, red fruit compote, cherry, pepper and a hint of resin. On the palate, the aromas of pine needle carpet add freshness to a velvety, round texture. It's very spicy, with licorice and clove. Wild strawberry and raspberry add a tangy note, while bitters on the finish give a complexity that transports. This amphora-aged wine is one of our favorites.

2 Domaine ReniteoLiger, Le Fleuve 2024 - Domaine Reniteo

Luscious with a touch of concentrated raspberry, elegant with notes of dried rose and violet, and full of character with a hint of smoke. It's a wine we love, full of energy, that gets us off the ground while giving us a breath of fresh air. Its powdery texture and mellow tannins provide an enveloping, comforting sensation without ever losing its freshness. A long finish of black pepper and blackcurrant.

Chez Muron 2023 - Domaine Sérol3 Domaine Sérol

After oxygenation, the wine gains in intensity to reveal aromas of raspberry, blackcurrant, pepper, cumin and graphite. The texture is fluid and silky. It's greedy and elegant, with great energy. Its youth gives it a tension that wakes you up, and a dynamic finish with notes of fresh mint, red fruit and pepper. A wine that can be kept.

5 Domaine Florent ThinonGarde-bœufs 2024 - Domaine du Tafret

The wine's nose is defined here by an intoxicating, engaging perfume of white and black pepper, leather and peony. On the palate, the acidic attack introduces a silky, elegant texture. Neither too rich nor too light, the wine has a round, refreshing feel, marked by a graphite impression, before finishing on long, peppery, licorice notes. A bottle you won't forget, and all the better for it.

Le Rouge 2024 - Domaine Florent Thinon4 Domaine Du Tafret Raphael Midoir Bio Oisly Grande Brosse Transparent

The nose is already intense, with aromas of smoke, concentrated black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry) and pepper. On tasting, the acidity accompanies a palate with great depth. The fruit is still present, and the finish, enhanced by a note of ginger, gives a nice pep. The tannins are still a little young and tight and will need aeration, or a little waiting, to refine them and allow the wine to reveal its full potential.

6 Domaine DésormièreTradition 2013 - Domaine Désormière

Gamay in all its splendor in this traditional cuvée. The nose reveals aromas of black fruit, pepper, smoke and eucalyptus. Round and juicy on the palate. A pleasurable wine that will suit any occasion, and given the price, we won't go without.
