Top 10 raw-milk Camemberts from Normandy

Top 10 raw-milk Camemberts from Normandy

7/16/19

As experts in taste, the Gault&Millau guide launches its gourmet selections based on emblematic products.

Why Gault&Millau selections?

Created in 1791, Camembert takes its name from the village of the same name in the Orne region of France.Camembert, long imitated but never equalled, has been awarded AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée), then AOP (Appellation d'Origine Protégée) status. In 2021, the latter could be extended and made more flexible, to include pasteurized Camemberts. In this context, Gault&Millau, through its expertise, wishes to guide consumers by offering its selection of the best raw-milk Camemberts from Normandy, tasted and rated blind by its taste experts.

How does it work?

Gault&Millau called on the Association de Gestion des ODG Laitiers Normands (an organization for the defense and management of Normandy raw milk Camemberts) to solicit its producers,

Gault&Millau carried out a blind tasting of 16 cheeses, following an evaluation grid created specifically for this tasting.

The expert jury - made up of Marc Esquerré, Director of Gault&Millau selections, Eric Buisset, Chef toqué Gault&Millau, and Nathalie Quatrehomme, product specialist - awarded a score out of 20 to each of the cheeses tasted: organic, artisanal or industrial, all respecting the same maturing conditions.

The 16 products were thus examined by the jury's discerning eye and palate.
