Pic du Midi: France’s highest luxury hotel reopens after 30 years

Located at an altitude of 2,620 meters, the Hôtellerie des Laquets reopened on September 25, 2026, in the Hautes-Pyrénées.

It is once again welcoming guests. After three years of renovations, the Hôtellerie des Laquets welcomed its first guests on September 25. Located at an elevation of 2,620 meters on the slopes of the peak, the hotel was built in the early 1930s.

Architecture in harmony with the surroundings

The hotel closed in 1996 for renovation and the construction of an extension. To restore the property, the architectural firm drew on the original stone structure of the building so that it would blend into the surroundings with a traditional, mountain-hut-style design. The goal: to avoid compromising the Pic du Midi’s bid for UNESCO World Heritage status, the outcome of which will be announced in July 2027.

The renovation cost nearly 12 million euros, and the hotel is expected to be rated four stars soon. Inside, the spaces were designed to open up to the outdoors, from the guest rooms to the staircases, the dining areas and the 80 m2 terrace. All offer a view of the Pyrenees mountain range. While the spirit of a mountain refuge has been preserved, the decor is chic and refined.

More than just a night’s stay: an experience

To reach the hotel, guests first take the cable car from the La Mongie resort up to the summit of the Pic du Midi. A short ride on a private cable car then takes them 257 meters back down. It is here, below the summit, that the hotel is located.

For a night at France’s highest luxury hotel, guests can choose between double rooms in the historic wing, others in the new extension, or a premium suite suitable for a family. Half-board is included, with dinner at the bistronomic restaurant, whose menu is designed by Stéphane Tournié, chef at Les Jardins de l’Opéra (2 toques) in Toulouse.

To round out the experience, guests are invited to explore the summit of the Pic du Midi, at an altitude of 2,877 meters, and its facilities, such as the planetarium and the Observatory’s dome, in the heart of the International Dark Sky Reserve, an area protected from light pollution.

A double room can be booked from 599 euros per night, with access to the cable cars, a tour, dinner and breakfast included. This rate is in line with the nightly rate for the former scientists’ quarters at the Pic du Midi Observatory. Currently open four nights a week, the Hôtellerie des Laquets will be open seven days a week from December 4.
