Gault&Millau's review 2025

The only palace on the Left Bank and one of the most emblematic addresses in Paris, the Lutetia is a symbol of both good times (in the 1910s, it welcomed provincials shopping at Le Bon Marché) and bad times (it was the headquarters of German counter-espionage in 1940), before becoming a haven for artists and writers. Albert Cohen notably wrote "Belle du Seigneur" there... Reopened in 2018 after more than four years of renovation, the Lutetia has regained its splendor under the impetus of Jean-Michel Wilmotte, who has redesigned the entire space while remaining faithful to this legendary setting, a singular mix of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Favoring natural light and noble materials, the architect has imagined a universe in its own right, with strict, uncluttered lines. Visible from boulevard Raspail, the impressive Bar Joséphine unfurls around a 10 m long counter, the stronghold of head bartender Nicola Battafarano, who regales the Tout-Paris with tasty cocktails. The Brasserie Lutetia plays touch-and-go with the Saint-Germain, the palace's legendary venue with a magnificent glass roof, painted in transparency by artist Fabrice Hybert. Equally remarkable are the 184 rooms and suites, with their sober elegance, beige and blue tones and marble bathrooms. Last but not least, the luxurious Akasha spa and its 17-metre-long swimming pool make this one of the capital's most exclusive and unique palaces, now part of the Israeli Alrov group.
