Not far from Nantes, unquestionably one of the region's finest refuges. The establishment, affiliated to SLH - Small Luxury Hotels of the World, is nestled in the Château de Maubreuil, a 19th-century nugget reinvented in 2010 by Philippe Rousse, who first transformed it into an art gallery, then, after a lengthy restoration, into a refined, arty hotel. Conceived as an ode to the world of travel, the 17 rooms and suites are all unique cocoons, with a particular focus on the African lodge-style "Retour de Voyage" suite. The ground-floor lounges, with their exotic furnishings, extend this taste for elsewhere, as does the spa under the historic vaults, offering a range of Cinq Mondes treatments and rituals. Last but not least, a special mention must go to the vast grounds, nestled in beautiful exotic gardens.
