Exceptional Hotel Not far from Nantes, unquestionably one of the region's finest refuges. The establishment is nestled in the Château de Maubreuil, a 19th-century nugget reinvented in 2010 by Philippe Rousse, who first transformed it into an art gallery, then, after a lengthy restoration, into a refined, arty hotel. Conceived as an ode to travel, the 14 rooms and suites are all unique cocoons, with a particular focus on the African lodge-style "Retour de Voyage" suite. The ground-floor lounges, with their exotic furnishings, extend this taste for elsewhere, as does the spa under the historic vaults, offering a range of Cinq Mondes treatments and rituals. A special mention goes to the vast grounds, home to exotic gardens, and to La Table du Marquis, led by chef Clément Vincent, whose menu offers a delightful window on the world.
