You don't have to take your vows to stay in this extraordinary monastic city. Built in 1101, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is home to a hotel renovated in 2014 by design duo Jouin&Manku, who have kept the luminous sobriety of the premises intact. Housed in the former cells, the 54 rooms and suites have been designed as intimate refuges, with their combination of stone and metal and their furniture custom-made by local craftsmen. The restaurant in the chapter house was designed by Thibaut Ruggeri (ex-Michel Guérard). The site also boasts a media library in the chapel, with videos and books on the city. As nothing beats the experience, guests can visit the abbey at any time, including at night, when the buildings are enveloped in a mysterious golden halo.
