Angoulême's Musée de la bande dessinée celebrates gastronomy with a new exhibition

Benoit Gaboriaud | 1/2/24, 9:30 AM

From Obelix to Alain Passard, the "Croquez, la BD met les pieds dans le plat" exhibition traces a century of close links between comics and gastronomy.

To coincide with the upcoming Angoulême International Comics Festival , the Musée de la bande dessinée is dedicating a vast exhibition to gastronomy: "Croquez, la BD met les pieds dans le plat", to be enjoyed from January 25 to November 10 , 2024 .With this new exhibition, Mathieu Charrier, head of culturalprogramming , explains that he wanted to "show how food defines society , but alsocomic bookheroes: Obélix and his wild boar, Captain Haddock and his bottle of whisky or Gaston Lagaffe and hisStrawberry Codfish".

The Croquez!

exhibition, featuring over a hundred authors, is divided into six themes: characters, culinarymetaphor, intimate stories, reportage, food as a weapon of emancipation and thefuture. "Over thepastcentury, food has been used in comics in avariety ofways. We show thatit can be the point of entry foran autobiographicalstory, as in "Fraise et Chocolat", in which Aurélia Aurita talks about her sexuality; it can be used as a metaphor to address current affairs on the covers of Charlie Hebdo, Fluide glacial and The New Yorker; or be the subject in its own right ofreportage comics devoted to chefs orproducers, such as Christophe Blain's "En cuisine avec Alain Passard"(2015), which is the firstof its kind."

Along the picture rails, fans of both comics andgastronomy will be able tofeast their eyes onnever-before-seenoriginals of Asterix, Lucky Luke, Gaston or Winsor McCay's "Nightmares of the Chester FondueLover "(1904) from themuseum 's collection . As a preview,Franckie Alarcon will unveil plates from his forthcoming book dedicated to thechildhoods of great pastry chefs such as Pierre Hermé.

Fromsmell to touch, this interactive exhibition will awaken all thevisitor 's senses , and willopen with the emblematic Asterix and Cleopatra song "Quand l'appétit va, tout va" ("When appetite goes, everything goes"). We're salivatingin anticipation!

Croquez, la BD met les pieds dans le plat, from January 25 to November 10 , 2024, atLa Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image, in Angoulême.

When chefs take to the high seas

Cruise ships and gastronomy form a well-known duo. Both have been sailing the horizon since the early 20th century. Today, while the sector seems to be experiencing neither crisis nor slowdown, cruise lines are increasingly calling on chefs whose careers are already well established on land, to appeal to an inevitably volatile clientele.
