André Lurton, one of Bordeaux's leading figures
He was a visionary. A visionary like no other. A farmer's soul, of course, but above all a commercial one.
"André Lurton passed away at Château Bonnet, in the room where he was born 94 years ago," said Pascal Le Faucheur, who heads the group, which operates ten Bordeaux estates spread over more than 600 hectares of vines. Château Bonnet is located in the commune of Grézillac in Gironde, where he was mayor, and which his father bought in 1897.
A leading figure in Bordeaux, he was a tireless ambassador for the region's wines, as well as a pioneer in many fields. A former member of the French Resistance, he was President of the CIVB and, arguably, the driving force behind the creation of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.
He owned Château La Louvière, Château Couhins Lurton, Château Cruzeau, Château de Rochemorin in Pessac-Léognan and, of course, Château Bonnet in Entre-deux-Mers.
