The first member of the Mama Shelter family (founded in 2008 by the Trigano family), this utterly unique hotel has helped revitalize the Porte de Bagnolet neighborhood, now one of the “hot spots” of eastern Paris. The credit goes to designer Philippe Starck (once again highly inspired), who has thoroughly shaken up the conventions of the hotel industry with his graffiti-covered ceilings, and a lobby and lounges filled with foosball tables, ping-pong tables, and DJ sets. On the dining front, the restaurant offers hearty neo-brasserie cuisine and homemade pizzas—with menus historically developed in collaboration with Guy Savoy—which can be enjoyed on a terrace overlooking the Petite Ceinture railway tracks or on the suspended rooftop. This “living space with rooms too” (according to the Trigano philosophy) houses 170 retreats with equally off-the-wall decor —Darth Vader masks serving as lampshades and home theaters—which doesn’t detract from the genuine comfort provided by five-star bedding and perfectly appointed bathrooms.
