Gault&Millau's review 2026

Built at the end of the XVIᵉ century as a Jesuit novitiate thanks to the generosity of Louise d'Ancézune, the Cloître Saint-Louis carries with it more than four centuries of history. Behind its walls, designed by architects Martelange, Péru and de Royers de la Valfenière, religious, soldiers and hospitallers have succeeded one another. Transformed in turn into a convent, a branch of the Hôtel des Invalides and a civilian hospital, it has stood the test of time without losing its soul. Classified as a Historic Monument since 1950, this Avignon masterpiece now offers travelers an exceptional address. Entirely renovated, the hotel combines memory and contemporary comfort in its 80 spacious rooms, some accessible via an unusual chapel, others overlooking the inner courtyard or gardens shaded by three-hundred-year-old plane trees. The rooftop swimming pool, overlooking the rooftops of Avignon, extends the summer interlude, while the secret garden and the chapel of Saint-Louis, a domed Baroque jewel consecrated in 1611, make up an address you'd like to keep to yourself, such is its rarity. And for gourmets, the Les Cocottes Saint Louis restaurant celebrates French cuisine inspired by the country's rich heritage, served in the warm atmosphere of the cloister.
