Opposite the Louvre-Lens museum, this handsome hotel was built in a coron (a group of former mining houses), which now houses 52 remarkably decorated rooms, with restored brick walls, thick carpets and fabrics in shades of dark green or luminous grey. The communal areas, too, multiply references to the past, with heavy pendant lights again illuminating the brick walls, sleek furnishings and black earthenware floors. Equally spectacular, the volumes of Le Galibot restaurant are highlighted by dozens of small coal mine lamps, the walls covered with palisade-like railway sleepers, all enhanced by traditional colored cement tiles. Visitors come here for a drink or to sample the tasty bistro cuisine before exploring the museum's collections. An exceptional place, a moving witness to the industrial past that has shaped the memory of the people and landscapes of the region.
